Expanding H9 flash to a Micro SD card...

========================EXPANDING H9 FLASH TO MICRO SD CARD=====================

ZGEMMA H9 has a 256 MB Flash, so serious hobbyists need to expand its Flash. There are 2 ways:

1) Flash Expander E2 plugin, to a fast USB 3.0 stick (I will write in detail about it elsewhere) or

2) the following script moving it all from the flash to a fast Micro SD memory card...

Various Micro SD cards have been tested: class4, class 10 and class A1. In principle, they are all working but not all Micro SD cards will work.

HOW TO CHECK IF A MICRO SD CARD IS OK FOR FLASH EXPANSION WITH H9
==================================================================

Insert the Micro SD card into Zgemma H9 and reboot the box. Check the /var/logs/message file, using the PuTTy app. Log in by writing:

root
password - for an image you use (for example "pure2" for PurE2 image [without "" signs]).

Now, copy and paste this telnet command into PuTTy:

cat /var/log/messages | grep mmcblk0:

If you see these messages:

Apr 6 19:28:13 zgemmah9t user.info kernel: mmcblk0: mmc0:59b4 USDU1 7.31 GiB
Apr 6 19:28:13 zgemmah9t user.info kernel: mmcblk0: p1

or

May 20 13:25:49 zgemmah9s user.info kernel: mmcblk0: mmc0:aaaa SC64G 59.5 GiB
May 20 13:25:49 zgemmah9s user.info kernel: mmcblk0: p1

...then you can proceed..

Download the "H9 SDcard Mover" attached to this message.

Extract the zip file and copy all 3 files to Zgemma H9 /tmp folder, using FileZilla Client app, for instance.

Now, right click on h9_mmc.sh file > File permissions > 755 > OK.

Warning: all data on your Micro SD card will be lost when your start this script!

Start the script by the following 2 telnet commands:

cd /tmp

./h9_mmc.sh

Reboot the box and wait for the script to move everything to Micro SD card.

Your Zgemma H9 just got a boost!

Just remember that there is a small price to pay: your flash is larger but the Zgemma H9 might be a bit slower than if everything is running from H9 flash alone.

=======================================================================

How to go back to a previous state of things (rollback to rootfs, to NAND)?

Simply flash a new image.

Do not mount Micro SD card using pManager (in PurE2 or any kind of Device Manager in any other Enigma2). Then, the script can't umount it. Once I unmounted it, using pManager - it worked! -bier-

New images for H9 models are available, now that the Team has those models: http://pur-e2.club/OU/images/index.php?dir=6.2/airdigital/

The Flodder-like script, taken from a topic seen on OpenATV forum, which moves the whole H9 E2 to Micro SD card, is now included in the new PurE2 image for H9 models!

0) Format your Micro SD card into EXT4. Anything from 4GB upwards, I guess - mine is 64GB and it worked. Do it in your laptop, say using Mini Tool Partition Wizard or Paragon freeware.

1) Put the MicroSD card in your Zgemma H9.

2) On your Zgemma remote press: MENU > pManager > Scripts > right arrow on the remote > User Scripts > Start script > h9_mmc.sh > OK > execute once.

It will take its time and you will see it all happening in front of you, on the TV screen, all of it being copied to the Micro SD card.

Once it stops and tells you how much it copied, at which speed etc. - it is over.

3) Go to PuTTy on your PC and log in, then write on your keyboard the following commands:

username > hit ENTER on your keyboard
password > ENTER
sync > ENTER

4) Go back to your H9 remote control > exit 'till you see Standby/Restart > Restart (not Restart enigma) > OK.

5) If you want to go back to your flash only - do the same, just execute h9_nand.sh script.

Cheerio! -bier-

P.S. Logging into PuTTy and 'sync' command (step 3) might not be needed in the next version of the script.

Weird!

I tested and confirmed Delfi's discovery that even if PurE2 doesn't detect mSD card, the script to move everything to mSD card still works!!!

I just flashed a new version of H9S PurE2 and mounted USB and HDD. Then I pushed in my mSD card and I checked if PurE2 can see MicroSD card. It can't.

Both in pManager (nothing to be seen, in terms of mSD card) and PuTTy, with a command:

root@zgemmah9s:~# cat /var/log/messages | grep mmcblk0:
root@zgemmah9s:~#

But then I went into the pManager > Scripts and executed the h9_mmc.sh script for transfer of root ( / ) onto the mSD card - it worked!!!

Just to make sure... -bier-

Just a bit of advice: before reflashing, go back to original flash boot regime, as described above!!!

Get your mSD card out, format in EXT4, then do the usual flashing as normal... -bier-

Once flashed, add your mSD card and move the root to it, of course... :4_small16:

Delfi and I worked through the night and the end result is great! :12_small35:

Btw, I only helped a bit with research (I am no coder) - all kudos to Delfi for fixing the move_to_mSD card problem AND it seems now it works properly the other way, too!!! :4_small16:

So, whatever wasn't working in H9x series scripts to move back to NAND - now it does! And now the same script also works fully for H9.2X series with small flash!!! :EVERYD~313:

For now, of course, it's in PurE2... Just do the MENU > PMANAGER > SW MANAGER > CHECK FOR UPDATE > OK... RESTART...

Then, go to PMANAGER > SCRIPTS...

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12331

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12332

Soon, as always, this will be available for all OE-A images... 1987r4tfg

I just tested it - I moved everything (/ = root) successfully from NAND/flash to Micro SD card...

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12333

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12334

So, cheap boxes can remain cheap and still work fully, with lots of plugins and tools, large settings lists and everything else one might need. IPTV plugins/streaming, playback - will not be limited by the flash size in all H9 boxes with 256MB NAND!

Moreover, maestro Delfi managed to get it all boot from a USB stick, instead of microSD card, since we all have cheap USB sticks lying around... $%&/

And in H9x series there is a fast USB 3.0 port, so this could be a great solution!!! dvfgqv1e96

+++++++++++++PROCEDURE++++++++++++++++

So, firstly prepare your micro SD card in your PC (Windows, in this case, I use Mini Tool Partition Manager free), by deleting its partitions (if any), then creating one and formatting it in EXT4 (make it active, too):

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12336

Then, insert it onto Zgemma H9x/H9.2x and it should be like this...

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12335

Then pManager > Scripts...

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12337

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12338

index.php?page=Attachment&attachmentID=12339

...to be continued...

RESTART!

If you had enough of it and wanted to go back to NAND/flash only, do the opposite script...

...and RESTART!

The boot_mSD_card script is working but does not test
card errors at start ...

- does not test the presence of the mSD card
- does not test if the card partitioning is OK

I know these are stupid errors ! but ... I've made them
both !!! I forget to push the card till click and the card
was used for a Enigma2 image on Alien 5 !!! total failure !

It happened to me once, not pushing the card all the way in... and even not at all (I forgot) - and it behaved as if it was inside.... I had to do it all over again... dvfgqv1e96

On the plus side, it moves everything to mSD even if it is not detected... :)

Indeed, their devs promised.... and it seems they forgot...

On the other hand, we're all fallible, so a light-hearted joke is not a bad thing, especially on myself, as I prepped everything to move the root to mSD and then did it without actually putting the mSD in the STB... ZRC(&%

We get tired sometimes and do not want to go to bed... like now... and we should... so, thanx for the warning, I'm off... :)

ServiceApp issue

Been using the SD Card mover script for a while now and worked fine.

For the latest images, I have a problem with ServiceApp plugin. I am using a ZGemma H9S and when I install ServiceApp from the plugins, this works well without SD card move. I get picture and souund. But when I run the H9_boot_mSD.sh script (Which works successfully), I get no picture when playing IPTV but I do get sound.

This was never a problem in old PurE2 images. Anyone got any ideas?

Which latest image exactly?

From 14th April images are to be flashed via a USB stick because of changes to FFmpeg package etc.

Do it from scratch, if you haven't, don't restore settings, don't change the skin, don't add anything at all. Then move it all to mSD and see... Then, add ServiceApp and compare...

And good luck!

I have tried it loads of different ways mate. Installed ServiceApp then ran SD card script. Also installed ServiceApp once script has been completed. All done from USB stick brand new images. Last one I tried was zgemmah9s-PurE2-6.2-20190414_usb.zip

I have a working image from 17th March but tried various ones since and same problem on all of them.

All a bit weird - cannot tell you how many times I have done this before with no issue. As I said before, ServiceApp works fine off flash, but fails to work once the script has run successfully.
